Multi-award-winning theatre company Concrete Youth, in proud partnership with Hull’s much-loved Back to Ours, are delighted to launch Haptic Tales – a brand-new pilot story massage programme designed especially for people labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities.
Taking place in community halls across Hull, Haptic Tales removes travel and geographical barriers by bringing creative, accessible experiences into the heart of local neighbourhoods. This new initiative delivers meaningful, sensory sessions right on residents’ doorsteps, with the aim of enhancing community cohesion and supporting wellbeing.
Story massage combines gentle storytelling with positive touch, offering a calming and inclusive experience that promotes communication and connection. Each session includes soft mats and hoists, enabling participants to enjoy comfortable floor time and access the sessions in ways that suit their individual needs. Whether it’s the gentle rhythm of a fairy-tale or the soft press of a breeze, Haptic Tales brings stories to life through positive touch – creating a joyful, enriching space for participants, families, and carers alike.
Annabelle Lee, Head of Education and Engagement at Concrete Youth, said: “We are so proud to launch Haptic Tales in Hull. This programme brings together Concrete Youth and Back to Ours’ shared commitment to inclusivity and cultural engagement, creating something truly special for people labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities. By delivering this work right into the heart of communities, we’re not only removing barriers – we’re building bridges. It’s an exciting step forward in making high-quality, creative experiences accessible to all, and we’re so proud to be doing it hand-in-hand with such brilliant partners.”
Lou Yates, Artistic Director & CEO at Back to Ours, said: “We’re excited to be working with Concrete Youth on this project, it’s so important that we work together to make sure that the arts are for everyone to enjoy”.
Sessions will begin in June, and places can be booked for free now at www.concreteyouth.co.uk or www.backtoours.co.uk.
