Education & Engagement Practitioners

Concrete Youth is looking to expand its pool of Education & Engagement Practitioners across the UK.

We are seeking artists, facilitators, sensory practitioners, theatre-makers, inclusive arts practitioners, access workers, care-sector practitioners and creative educators who are interested in delivering high-quality sensory arts and education work with schools, care settings, families, libraries, museums, community organisations and public venues.

This is a paid opportunity to join Concrete Youth’s Education & Engagement practitioner pool. Work will be offered on a booking-by-booking basis, depending on location, availability, experience, suitability and the needs of each project.

About Concrete Youth

Concrete Youth is an award-winning charity dedicated to increasing cultural provision for people labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Since our formation in 2019, we have engaged over 10,500 audience members across five continents, creating inclusive and sensory experiences that champion accessibility and creativity. Our work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to engage with the arts in meaningful and empowering ways.

Our touring department specialises in delivering multi-sensory theatre productions that captivate and inspire audiences labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities. In 2024, we made history with the launch of Sensory Cinders, the first-ever West End production created specifically for audiences labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities, solidifying our reputation in inclusive theatre.

Our education department has been recognised as a leader in sensory education, winning two consecutive Education & Training Awards for Best Sensory Education. Our programmes are designed to provide inclusive, educational, and high-quality services to schools, organisations, and communities. We deliver impactful learning opportunities that nurture creativity and inclusion while empowering the next generation of theatre-makers and audiences.

As a research-led organisation, our senior management team are also academic researchers, combining their scholastic expertise with their roles at Concrete Youth to deliver work that is not only innovative but also deeply relevant to inclusive and sensory practice. This commitment to research underpins everything we do, ensuring that our artistic and educational outputs remain at the forefront of inclusive practice.

About the role

Education & Engagement Practitioners support the delivery of Concrete Youth’s sensory education, engagement and public programme activity.

Depending on experience and the needs of each booking, this may include:

• delivering sensory workshops;

• supporting sensory workshops;

• supporting sensory stories and participatory sessions;

• working in schools, care settings and community spaces;

• supporting public programme activity in libraries, museums, galleries and arts venues;

• assisting with festivals, installations or public engagement activity;

• supporting participants labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities;

• working alongside teachers, carers, support staff, families and venue teams;

• helping create calm, responsive, inclusive and accessible creative environments.

Practitioners may be invited to deliver independently, co-deliver with another practitioner, assist a session or take part in supported delivery, depending on their experience and the type of booking.

Who we are looking for

We are interested in hearing from people with experience or strong interest in one or more of the following areas:

• sensory theatre or sensory arts;

• inclusive arts practice;

• working with people labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities;

• schools, colleges or education settings;

• care homes, day services or adult social care;

• museums, libraries, galleries or community engagement;

• facilitation, theatre, movement, music, storytelling, design or participatory arts;

• access, inclusion, communication or disability-led practice;

• working with children, young people, adults or families in creative settings.

We are looking for people who are thoughtful, reliable, responsive and generous in their practice, with a genuine commitment to creating high-quality inclusive experiences for people labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

We are especially interested in practitioners based in or near

• Yorkshire/Humber/North East;

• London/South East;

• North West;

• Midlands;

• South West/Wales;

• other UK regions where practitioners are willing to travel.

We are gradually building a wider UK practitioner pool so that we can deliver more work locally, reduce travel where possible and strengthen access to sensory education across the country.

What we expect from practitioners

Education & Engagement Practitioners should be able to:

• work with care, patience and professionalism;

• respond sensitively to participants’ needs, communication styles and access requirements;

• follow Concrete Youth’s safeguarding, health and safety and professional conduct expectations;

• communicate clearly with Concrete Youth staff, clients, carers and venue teams;

• arrive prepared and on time;

• read and respond to booking briefing emails;

• follow relevant risk assessments and reporting procedures;

• understand when to ask for support or escalate a concern;

• avoid making major changes to a session without checking with Concrete Youth;

• represent Concrete Youth’s values positively.

Training and support

All new Education & Engagement Practitioners will receive in-depth training and induction before being treated as fully active within the practitioner pool. Practitioners may also be invited to take part in supported delivery or receive feedback as part of Concrete Youth’s quality control and professional development process.

Fees and expenses

This is paid work. Fees will always be in line with or above Equity standard rates and will be confirmed per booking, depending on the role, location, length and complexity of the session. Travel, accommodation and expenses will always be included where appropriate.
